King Cakes have arrived just in time for Mardi Gras!

Get ready to push those New Year’s resolutions aside because another tasty holiday is on the horizon! Taste a Little Happiness, Mardi Gras style! Mardi Gras has crept up on us early this year but don’t worry, we have your King Cakes.

Woven together with buttery danish dough, baked to perfection and hand decorated with hand-dyed sprinkles to make sure those signature colors pop, you won’t believe what you’ve been missing.

Now what’s the big idea with king cakes? We thought you’d never ask.

King cake is usually eaten January 6th in honor of Epiphany, the 12th night, marking the arrival of the Three Wise Men (The Kings) of Bethlehem. They delivered the gifts to baby Jesus, who represents the plastic baby that’s normally placed into the cakes. Crazy huh? All of this history turns into food, lately cakes. We can get use to this.

King cakes, probably because they’re so darn tasty, are eaten right up to Fat Tuesday, before Ash Wednesday which is the start of Lent. Imagine it as the last hurrah before the big fast. A long last hurrah but a good one at that.

The King Cake isn’t what it use to be that’s for sure. It started out as a French bread, a baguette-type with sugar and a fava bean inside. Now some are made with brioche and others with puff pastry. Here at Poppies our danish dough is rolled twice with butter to get that delightful flaky texture. While we do not bake the baby inside due to health concerns and codes, we will provide it so you can enjoy the tradition. Tradition says you get to be king for a day if you find the baby but it comes with responsibility; you also have to buy next year’s King cake.

Now onto those beautiful colors. We wanted to make sure ours stood out so we hand dye our sugar sprinkles the official colors of Mardi Gras; Purple for justice, green for faith and gold for power. Bring the colors, traditions and flavors of New Orleans to your home or office with the help of Poppies and Taste a Little Happiness, Mardis Gras Style.

Did we mention you can also get King Cake donuts! Filled with Raspberry Jam or Bavarian Cream it is the perfect excuse for King Cake at breakfast.
